Recap by phillip woo

Smart Declaration settled a distant fourth along the fence, shifted out five deep soon after straightening and quickened nicely to get up in the final few metres for the win in a blanket finish. Great Run settled midfield along the rails, rallied three deep upon straightening and finished well with a step back in distance to make it close at the wire. General Iron travelled worse than midfield along the rails, was held up until he angled into the clear five deep at the 150m and closed nicely to just miss second. He's ready to win. Brilliant Proposal was able to cross to the front from a wide gate, cornered a length on top and was swamped for a placing in the shadows of the post. Shadowfaxe eased back after leading early on to settle one off in third, straightened three deep and was stopping 100m out as the favourite despite a rise in class. Groovy made some progress without menacing after travelling third from the rear. Excel Onself eased back from a wide gate to travel fourth from the rear out deep with cover, swung the final bend widest out and only made a mild bid. Brillante travelled with cover one off the fence in fifth, swung the final bend with two wider out and gradually gave way over the final 150m. Fun 'N' Games was stopping 150m out after settling second in a run along the rails.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of FUN 'N' GAMES, B Prebble stated that he rode his mount aggressively in the early stages to take up a leading position which was similar to how he rode the horse at its most recent start when successful.

He said, despite being aggressively ridden in the early stages, BRILLIANT PROPOSAL showed more speed than FUN 'N' GAMES and was able to cross his mount making the first turn.

He said he was concerned regarding the chances of FUN 'N' GAMES in the early stages as the horse did not travel as strongly as it did at its most recent start.

He added he was obliged to place FUN 'N' GAMES under heavy pressure prior to the Home Turn to maintain its position and shortly after entering the Straight the horse commenced to give ground and over the concluding stages felt "weak".

A veterinary inspection of FUN 'N' GAMES immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Also after the race, J Moreira (SHADOWFAXE) stated that whilst he had to ride his mount along for some distance in the early stages to cross runners to his inside, nonetheless he was of the opinion that SHADOWFAXE was disappointing in the manner in which it did not close off the race as he expected it would.
