Blackbookers from Thursday night are a little trickier than usual, since there will be no more racing at Happy Valley for the rest of the season so any horses to follow will be seen in action at Sha Tin on either the turf or the all-weather but Golden Addiction has already shown his versatility.

The John Size-trained gelding has already shown that he acts well on the all-weather and punters who did their money on Thursday on him as favourite should get a chance to recoup those losses before the term is out.

Joao Moreira has been brilliant for most of his time in Hong Kong but might have erred and lost Thursday's race in the early stages when he was fairly quiet on Golden Addiction as others jockeyed for positions close to the speed.

Perhaps Moreira anticipated a stronger pace that did not eventuate when Invictus was taken to the rear and Flying Unicorn was happy to let others make the speed, but Golden Addiction surrendered early to end up midfield rather than a length or two closer.

There was no disadvantage being right on top of the speed on Thursday night and, in the wash up, the first three over the line were all in front of Golden Addiction when the dash to the line commenced and a slick 23.14 seconds was recorded for the final 400m. He kept manfully to his guns for fourth and atonement is not far away.

At the start of the night, Little Rainforest did a good job to hang on for third after being front and centre in a very hot lead pace over 1,800m. This was his first attempt in Class Five and at the distance, so it was an eye-catching pointer for a win in the grade after the warp speed early tempo.

What will be crucial, though, is how he handles a switch to the all-weather as his Sha Tin turf form has clearly been inferior to his Happy Valley form in the past.

If Manfred Man Ka-leung can get him to handle the all-weather - where he has yet to race - then Little Rainforest's modest season could have a happier ending in the cellar grade.
