Champion jockey Zac Purton had a quiet afternoon, while his arch-rival Joao Moreira won four at Sha Tin, with just a single for the Australian when Universal Union broke through for his first local win in the Exultation Handicap (1,400m).
At short odds, Benno Yung Tin-pang-trained Universal Union ran all over the track in the final 200m, ducking in sharply after Purton took him to the lead, but the four-year-old managed to concentrate long enough to get the job done.
"He does have some upside, but he has a bit to learn still, too," Purton said. "He was pretty lucky to run into such a weak Class Three."
