For a horse of a certain level, the 1,000m races don't come along often enough but California Bounty gets one at Happy Valley tonight and with it his chance to win the Hong Kong Golf Club Trophy.

A winner of two 1,000m races in England and Ireland as a two-year-old, California Bounty has won three of six at the trip here but hasn't had much opportunity to win more of them.

Three early wins in Hong Kong lifted California Bounty (Alvin Ng Ka-chun) into triple figures in the ratings and there he hovered all last season.

Not quite good enough for the big races even at his distance, the gelding was a game fourth in the Sha Tin Sprint Trophy in October then had just one shot at a race at Happy Valley over the minimum trip, when he worked hard off a wider gate and had to settle for fifth to Ensemble.

That was off a rating of 105, but a steady diet of races over the 1,200m distance, which he doesn't quite run out, has seen California Bounty slide back to a mark of 90 and in a race to suit tonight with another five pounds off for Ng's claim.

He again has an outside draw in the small field of seven but, with the light weight, will likely press on for the front and let the C+3 track work its leader-favouring magic.

For a danger, Imperial Champion (Vincent Ho Chak-yiu) stands out after being very heavily bet into favouritism when he finished second to Peniaphobia last start over 1,200m.

The track that night was also favouring on-speed and Imperial Champion led the race only to find Peniaphobia too strong but that form got a boost when the winner took out the Jockey Club Sprint.

And if those two get caught in a battle for the lead, Douglas Whyte will surely be box seated and waiting to be too strong for both on Charity Joy.
