Bauyrzhan Murzabayev has the backing of Zac Purton, and the Kazakh jockey hopes some advice from Joao Moreira can ensure he is right in the thick of it on Wednesday night when he competes in the Longines International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) at Happy Valley for the first time.

Murzabayev, who will represent Germany in the IJC after winning four jockeys’ premierships in the country, is the $18 outsider of the 12-strong field of riders, but Purton feels he can spring an upset.

“I think the Kazakh king has got a very good book of rides, and I think he’s going to be a good chance,” Purton said, admitting “it’s a bit difficult for me” to win.

Murzabayev jumps aboard Gorgeous Vitality and Beauty Mission for Frankie Lor Fu-chuen, E Legend for Manfred Man Ka-leung and David Hall’s Solid Impact as he chases the HK$600,000 first prize.

“It’s my first time visiting Hong Kong, and I like it. I’m happy to be here and riding in the IJC,” Murzabayev said.

“I spoke yesterday with Joao Moreira. He’s a king in Hong Kong. He told me how to ride at Happy Valley, and I’m very lucky to have his advice. Thank you to Joao, and I’ll try my best.

“The best jockey in Hong Kong tipped that I win. It’s very beautiful and gives me confidence.”

Mickael Barzalona chats to the press on Tuesday night.

Also among the IJC line-up are two jockeys who were supposed to step out last year but were late withdrawals because of Covid – Japan’s Yuga Kawada and Frenchman Mickael Barzalona.

Both join Murzabayev as double-figure chances, with Barzalona – who has drifted from $11 to $13 – potentially value thanks to his ride aboard Quantum Patch for championship-leading trainer Pierre Ng Pang-chi.

“I think he’s one of my best chances of the competition, so hopefully, I’ll be able to give him a smooth race and get close,” Barzalona said.
