Brenton Avdulla is out to make the most of his “even sort of book” at Sha Tin on Sunday before heading back to Australia for Christmas and a family wedding.

Ninth in the championship with 11 wins through the first 27 meetings of his first full Hong Kong season, Avdulla has six rides this weekend before jetting out and missing the cards on December 20, 23 and 26.

“It’s just an even sort of book with a couple of little chances,” Avdulla said. “Where I’m at, at the moment, is not bad for the first time.

“A few of the new boys – myself, Andrea [Atzeni], Keagan [de Melo] – are starting to find our way, and we’re all quite similar with our positions. It’s all going well, and I just need to keep trying to hit the back of the net.”

Five of Avdulla’s 11 victories this term have come for John Size, and the compatriots combine with Fast Buck early on Sunday’s card, with the galloper looking to triumph in the Class Four Lukfook Jewellery Wedding Collection Handicap (1,200m) on the all-weather track after his couple of solid dirt showings this campaign.

“He ran well for me on the dirt a few runs ago, and then he had the turf run where he probably wasn’t at his best, then he wasn’t beaten far the other day with Alexis [Badel] on,” Avdulla said.

“He’s consistent enough when he hits the dirt, and I think he’s drawn OK to probably be somewhere just behind the speed and race well.”

War Of Courage will look to go one better than his last-start second under Angus Chung Yik-lai when he lines up in the Class Four Lukfook Jewellery Dear Q Handicap (1,400m), while All Is Good returns to Sha Tin for the Class Three Lukfook Jewellery Beloved Collection Handicap (1,200m) after his poor showing over the extended Valley mile.

“I thought War Of Courage ran well the other day. His work’s been good, and it’s probably not a bad little form race he’s come out of,” Avdulla said.

“I won the race on Holy Lake, and that horse has come out and won again since. I think he’s racing in nice enough form to run well again.

“The 1,400m seems to be All Is Good’s best distance at Sha Tin – he won four in a row – but his runs at 1,200m were OK prior, and off the 1,650m with a slight freshen back to 1,200m probably looks OK for him.”

Good Buddy in the Class Three Lukfook Jewellery Goldstyle Handicap (1,200m), Beauty Missile in the Class Three Lukfook Joaillerie Handicap (1,600m) and Northern Beast in the Class Four Lukfook Jewellery Heirloom Fortune Handicap (1,600m) are Avdulla’s other assignments.
