Galaxy Patch and California Spangle are on track for the final two Group Three features of the season, but Dennis Yip Chor-hong is leaning towards pulling the pin on Massive Sovereign’s campaign.
Fresh from his thrilling Group Three Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m) triumph, Galaxy Patch is an almost certain starter in the Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m) on June 23 with Pierre Ng Pang-chi confirming his stable star pulled up well from his latest appearance.
“He pulled up brilliant,” Ng said.
“We’ve got about a week to decide [whether he runs in the Premier Plate]. He seems normal, he looks perfect and we’ll see what the field is like.”

Emerging as a potential star in his first Hong Kong campaign, Galaxy Patch has recorded five wins and seconds in the Group One Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup (1,400m) and Hong Kong Derby (2,000m).
The Wandjina four-year-old finished powerfully to nail Chancheng Glory by a nose in the Lion Rock Trophy on June 2.
Top sprinter California Spangle will also have his final start of the season on June 23, with Tony Cruz confirming the multiple Group One winner will tackle the Group Three Premier Cup (1,400m).
“Everything’s going good,” Cruz said.

“He’ll have a barrier trial on Tuesday and I’m very happy with his condition.”
Bouncing back to top form since a switch to sprints this season, California Spangle won the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup and Group One Al Quoz Sprint (1,200m) before finishing second to Invincible Sage in the Group One Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1,200m) in April.
Ng will also have strong representation in the Premier Cup, with Mugen and Taj Dragon set to clash with California Spangle.
Mugen followed his fast-finishing third in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize with another strong finish to run fourth to Ka Ying Rising in the Group Three Sha Tin Vase (1,200m).

Taj Dragon won the Class One Racing Heritage Handicap (1,400m) last month before running fourth to Galaxy Patch in the Lion Rock Trophy.
“They’re both doing well,” said Ng, who shares the trainers’ championship lead with Francis Lui Kin-wai with nine meetings left this term.
“Mugen pulled up well, the same as Taj Dragon. Obviously the mile is a bit long in distance for [Taj Dragon] and dropping back to 1,400m, where he has had six wins, is much more suitable for him.”
While Galaxy Patch and California Spangle will add star power to the final feature races of the season, Derby hero Massive Sovereign is expected to bypass the Premier Plate and be rested for next term.
“I don’t think he’ll go [to the Premier Plate],” Yip said.

“We’ll just keep him working, but I think he’s had enough [racing] this season. He’s done a good job.”
Yip believes Massive Sovereign didn’t stay the 2,400m of the Group One Champions & Chater Cup when sixth behind Rebel’s Romance last month.
The former Irish galloper burst on the scene with brilliant 2,000m wins in his first two Hong Kong starts, headlined by the Derby in March.
“At the moment, we’re still thinking whether we go to the 1,600m [Hong Kong Mile] or 2,000m [Hong Kong Cup] on international day,” Yip said.
“I need to talk to Zac [Purton], see how he’s feeling in the morning, how he trials and see what Zac thinks.”
