Fresh off Group Three spoils at Sha Tin over the weekend, Andrea Atzeni is hoping to continue his strong form as he shapes up for a busy night at Happy Valley on Wednesday which sees him pair up with two last-start winners.

The Sardinian ran riot aboard the John Size-trained Stellar Express in the Group Three Bauhinia Sprint Trophy (1,000m) on Sunday and he teams up with the champion trainer again on what could be a fruitful night for the pair.

Two of Atzeni’s three rides on the night for Size are last-start winners, including A Americ Te Specso, who looks for career win number eight in the Class Three Des Voeux Handicap (1,650m).

After a slew of consistent efforts this campaign, he deservedly broke through with a comfortable success from midfield under James McDonald.

He is now reunited with his regular partner off a 6lb higher mark and although gate 12 is going to be a hurdle, Atzeni is hopeful of a big performance.

“He had a better draw the last day, I know he gets back in his races but from barrier 12 he’s going to have to make up a few extra lengths,” said Atzeni.

“He’s a horse who’ll get on the fence and be ridden for luck, he had a nice trip last time and hopefully he’ll get the same here.

“He’s gone up 6lb but he’s a horse who has always been consistent so he’s never really dropped in rating – if anything he’s kept creeping up. That’s never easy, but he never runs a bad race.

“It was a decent race last time – he’s a consistent sort who always runs a good race so I’m hoping for a big run.”

Atzeni also rides Amazing Kid for Size, who looks to follow up his maiden success in section one of the Class Four Jackson Handicap (1,200m).

He took full advantage of stall one at the Valley last month, sticking hard to the rail and riding it all the way to victory after a good surge in the straight.

Another good draw in stall four will give him every chance of following up and there is a lot to like about his chances.

“He had been threatening to do that for a while and we had a kind draw. We rode the fence and when I asked he let down quite nicely,” said Atzeni.

“He’s got another good draw in this race and should get another good trip around. He can put himself in a good spot as he’s not slow and has a bit of pace – it looks an open race and I hope there is more to come.”

Andrea Atzeni gets home on Tactical Command in July.

Away from his Size rides, Atzeni will have another strong chance with the Mark Newnham-trained Tactical Command, who tackles section three of the Jackson Handicap.

“He’s got a good gate and he’s back in Class Four level where he’s done all his winning,” Atzeni said of Tactical Command, who jumps from barrier two.

“He should be able to get a good spot from his draw and although he’s not the biggest, he’s carried near enough top weight before.

“I thought his last run was a very good one and with the hope of a nicer trip from a better draw, I hope he can go well in a grade he’s always done well in.”
