Andrea Atzeni is looking to continue the momentum of last week’s Wednesday treble when he teams up with the likes of hat-trick seeking Amazing Kid, Refusetobeenglish and I Can at Happy Valley seven days on.
The Sardinian jockey surged up to 19 winners for the season after the Sha Tin dirt treble and a week later, he has another strong book ahead of him with his sights set on third in the jockeys’ premiership.
“It was good to get a treble last week, I did have good rides but as we all know, that’s no guarantee of having winners,” said Atzeni, who currently sits fifth in the championship.
“Sunday was a bit quiet but hopefully we can keep the ball rolling. I don’t set any goals going into the season, but I finished third last season so it would be good to do it again. There’s lots of time left in the year so I’ll just try to keep riding winners and see where it takes me.”

Chief among Atzeni’s chances on Wednesday night is Amazing Kid, who bids for a hat-trick for trainer John Size in section one of the Class Four Lockhart Handicap (1,200m).
The Exceed And Excel galloper has gone from strength to strength in recent starts, backing up a victory when he had all the favours from barrier one with a comfortable success from just behind the speed.
He has drawn another low barrier in stall two and despite a 7lb rise in the weights, Atzeni is confident of another big run.
“He had the run of the race on the fence two starts ago but won it quite snugly, and I thought he won his last race really well,” said Atzeni. “It was a pretty dominant win – he looked comfortable the whole way and travelling strongly.
“It took a bit of time for him to gain some confidence, he lacked a bit of it early on but he’s still a young horse. Hopefully with a similar run to the last twice, he’ll have every chance and I’m pretty confident.”
Another of the 34-year-old’s strong chances is Refusetobeenglish, who looks to break his local maiden in the Class Three Southorn Handicap (1,200m).
He posted a career-best effort when a narrow third over track and distance last start and Atzeni hopes Wednesday could be the day for the Pierre Ng Pang-chi-trained Australian import.
“He’s been running pretty consistently. He’s very straightforward, but he doesn’t have loads of early speed,” said Atzeni.

“We managed to get a handy position last time but we’re drawn 10 tomorrow night, so there’s a chance we’ll be back a bit further than we want, but there looks to be some speed in the race.
“He’s improving with his racing and he’ll be doing some good late work.”
Atzeni is also putting his faith in the ever-reliable I Can, who looks to supplement a $51 shock win from earlier in the campaign in the Class Three O’Brien Handicap (1,800m) on his first try of the trip.
“He’s a horse that never lets you down really, he’s so consistent and just when you think he’s done, he pops up,” said Atzeni. “He’s going up to 1,800m but I think the trip should be OK; hopefully with a kind draw I can save some ground and the pace should be on which will suit him.”
