Andrea Atzeni helped Flow Water Flow boost his faint hope of making the Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) with a last-gasp victory to clinch a treble for the Sardinian jockey at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Adding to a memorable week after booting home a double at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, Atzeni won both sections of the Class Four Lung Yat Handicap (1,200m) on dirt on King Dance and Good Chap before striking in the Class Three Yau Oi Handicap (1,800m) on Flow Water Flow.

Desperately needing to boost his lowly rating of 63 to enhance his Derby bid, the John Size-trained Flow Water Flow emerged from traffic in the straight to continue his rapid progression with back-to-back victories.

“I’m getting the support and obviously being able to ride these lightweights, for me it’s a big help,” said Atzeni, who sits third in the championship with 25 wins.

Flow Water Flow (silver with blue and white checks) bursts through.

“I thought I could have won the first on Manythanks Forever but it didn’t happen and Rezeki ran well finishing second, but we had a good day.”

Stepping up to Class Three after a breakthrough victory last start, Flow Water Flow capitalised on his light weight of 115lb to salute as the $4.5 second favourite.

Atzeni was shuffled back in the field approaching the turn and held up behind a wall of horses, but the son of Proisir speared through a gap between rivals at the 200m to launch his run.

Karma stormed home down the centre of the track from last to loom as a knockout winner at $34, but Flow Water Flow lifted on his inside to prevail by a short head.

Dazzling Fit, another Derby hope and $3.7 favourite, was beaten half a length in third after also looming as a serious threat late.

Atzeni was impressed by Flow Water Flow, who boasts a strong record of two wins and three seconds from five starts.

“He did well to win really because with the kind gate [five], we were hoping to sit a little bit closer because we didn’t think the pace was going to be strong,” Atzeni said.

“He jumped fine, I followed Zac [Purton] on Dazzling Fit and thought he was the one to beat, but he got shuffled back which meant I got further back than I wanted.

“I had to wait for the gap to appear and once the gap opened, obviously going up in trip he let down quite nicely and I know he didn’t win by far, but I felt like I was always in control of the race.

“Obviously Karma’s a very good horse, he’s been around here a million times compared to my guy, but we had 115lb on our back.”

With his rating likely to rise to the high 60s, Flow Water Flow still faces a race against time to make the field for the city’s most coveted race, the HK$26 million BMW Hong Kong Derby on March 22.

“I think he’s got a bright future. As far as the Derby’s concerned, he might be too far behind schedule for that. We’ll wait and see,” Size said.

“He’s done well – he’s progressive, he continues to pitch up and do the right thing. I’ve asked him probably to do a little bit more than usual by stepping up in distance so quickly and he’s handled it. He’s gone from 1,200m to 1,800m pretty quickly and copped it and the same at home.”

Jerry Chau boots home Emblazon.

Emblazon was another Derby entrant to strike on Sunday, notching a fourth triumph from his past five starts with victory in the Class Three Yan Tin Handicap (1,400m).

The Cody Mo Wai-kit-trained gelding capitalised on a soft run behind the leaders from gate two to overhaul Ka Ying Attack by half a length, with another of Size’s Derby entrants Juneau Pride well beaten in third. Emblazon’s rating will hit the high 70s.
