Mark was Racing Post's scholarship holder on the 1995 British Horseracing Board Graduate Development Programme. After attaining a postgraduate diploma in broadcasting, he joined Racing Post in 1996 and was its chief sports writer before he moved to Australia in 2001. In Australia, he was the media manager of, among others, Centrebet, Sydney FC and Tom Waterhouse, and he ran the Western Australian Turf Club's racing and wagering operations.
