Southern Legend came with a well-timed run after travelling behind midfield to win second- up in his first Valley run. He showed potential in Australia prior to his opening failure as the favourite at Sha Tin and looks to have a promising future. Super Turbo came good burst late after his usual patient ride second from the rear from a wide gate this run to make it close on the wire. He's a Valley freak. Verbinsky hit the lead 120m out following a box-seat but couldn't hold off the top pair. He doesn't know how to run a bad race over this course but doesn't have many points in hand. Country Melody stayed on well following a rail's run ahead of midfield to give the Quartet some value in a vastly-improved run after failing to come close in six prior starts following a stable change. He'll need to prove this was no fluke. Lucky Ever finished well after peeling into the open at the 200m following a patient ride fourth from the rear. It was a pleasing first run at the Valley and does give connections an option outside Sha Tin heading into next season. House Of Fun faded over the last 100m after drawing level for the lead 200m out following a pace-talking run. He's better at Sha Tin. Racing Supernova was allowed to drop away at the 200m when failing to lift following a midfield run.

Racing Incident Report

Race Eight: (796)-SWEET ORANGE HANDICAP - Class 2 - 1200Metres

DRAGON GENERAL was slow to begin.

From a wide barrier, SUPER TURBO was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.

Near the 1150 Metres, COUNTRY MELODY and VERBINSKY were crowded for room inside HIGH FIVE (C Murray) which shifted in before being directed back out to relieve the tightening to runners on its inside.

C Murray was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.

Throughout the race, FLYING TOURBILLON travelled wide and without cover.

A veterinary inspection of RACING SUPERNOVA, HOUSE OF FUN and DRAGON GENERAL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

SOUTHERN LEGEND and SUPER TURBO were sent for sampling.

GENERAL:

9 July 2017 Sha Tin Racemeeting - Race 9 (787) The Stewards tonight questioned S Clipperton regarding his riding of PRAWN BABA, particularly approaching and passing the 600 Metres.

S Clipperton stated that it had been explained to him that PRAWN BABA is one-paced and benefits from a truly run race.

He also stated that he was instructed to ride PRAWN BABA positively in the early stages to take up a prominent position and to ensure that the horse was provided with clear and unimpeded running from straightening.

He said the middle stages of the race were run at a good tempo, however, the pace of the race slackened after the 1200 Metres.

He said passing the 800 Metres when racing behind GREEN DISPATCH and inside BASIC TRILOGY, PRAWN BABA appeared to come off the bridle and he had to ride it along from the 800 Metres to ensure that PRAWN BABA maintained its position behind GREEN DISPATCH.

He said as PRAWN BABA is one-paced, he did not wish to be left racing behind GREEN DISPATCH and BASIC TRILOGY after the 600 Metres as he felt that the horse would have its best chance if he were to make the race into a staying test as he did not believe he could outsprint ROCKETETEER if PRAWN BABA was not able to establish a margin over that horse.

He said for these reasons he commenced to ride PRAWN BABA aggressively from the 600 Metres to ensure that the principal chances in the race would have to make ground on PRAWN BABA whilst also ensuring the race did not become a sit and sprint race.

He added whilst this resulted in PRAWN BABA having to be ridden along earlier in the race than would normally be the case, he believed that riding the horse in this manner would give it the best opportunity to finish in front of the principal chances in the race.

Mr J Size, the trainer of PRAWN BABA, confirmed the instructions given to Jockey Clipperton and stated that, after reviewing the race and all the circumstances of the race, he was satisfied with Jockey Clipperton's riding of PRAWN BABA.
