Archippus came with a bold move from last to nail the favourite Team Fortune on the wire. He had been luckless in a number of earlier runs and the result wasn't a surprise with a return to one of his favourite surface on the dirt. Team Fortune cornered near two lengths on top after driving through to lead 1,000m out following sluggish break and was nipped on the wire. He lost nothing in defeat and remains one to follow on this surface. Dragon General defied a deep run without cover near the speed to hold onto a place. He has opened up new avenues following placings in back-to-back runs around a bend on both surfaces and will be winning shortly. Blocker Dee ran on steadily along the fence to fill a Quartet spot in a pleasing first run on the surface but is better at the Valley. Perpetual Treasure stayed on reasonably well after a deep run beyond midfield.

Racing Incident Report

Race Ten: (240)-SALISBURY HANDICAP - Class 2 - 1200Metres

At declaration time, K C Leung was declared as the rider of both CHARITY JOY and TRIUMPHANT JEWEL.

It was established that K C Leung had a firm commitment to ride CHARITY JOY.

As such, the Stewards permitted D Lane to be substituted as the rider of TRIUMPHANT JEWEL.

For this declaration error, Trainer D Cruz was fined $2,000.

From a wide barrier, ARCHIPPUS was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners in the early stages.

MALMSTEEN was crowded for room on jumping between MR GENUINE and TEAM FORTUNE which shifted in.

MR GENUINE was unable to obtain clear running until passing the 200 Metres.

Throughout the race, WAH MAY FRIEND and DRAGON GENERAL travelled wide and without cover.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MALMSTEEN, S Clipperton stated that the horse, which was having its first race start on the All Weather surface today, was never comfortable and he had to ride it aggressively for a considerable distance in the early stages in an endeavour to obtain a forward position.

He said MALMSTEEN did not travel well at any stage of the race and appeared to him not to be suited by the pressure of the race with other runners being similarly ridden to obtain forward positions.

He said having this in mind, he recommended to connections that they give consideration to returning the horse to a turf race and perhaps stepping it up in distance to allow MALMSTEEN the opportunity to obtain a forward position without having to be hard pressed to do so.

A veterinary inspection of MALMSTEEN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

When questioned, D Whyte stated that it had been intended for TEAM FORTUNE to be ridden behind the speed if possible.

He said however he had to ride his mount in the early stages to prevent being crossed by FLYING TOURBILLON and after doing this he allowed TEAM FORTUNE to cross MALMSTEEN to its inside as that horse was being hard ridden and did not appear to be showing the same early speed as TEAM FORTUNE.

A veterinary inspection of HAPPY METEOR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

ARCHIPPUS and TEAM FORTUNE were sent for sampling.

30 November 2016 Happy Valley Racemeeting ?V Race 8 (230) The Stewards today interviewed Trainer Y S Tsui regarding the instructions he provided to N Rawiller, the rider of HAPPY BAO BEI in this race.

Mr Tsui stated that he had been disappointed with the manner in which HAPPY BAO BEI had been finishing off some of its races when ridden along in or near the lead and therefore he asked Jockey Rawiller to ride the horse in about 4th or 5th position with cover, if possible.

He said he had hoped that VICTORY MARVEL would be ridden to take up a forward position and that HAPPY BAO BEI would be able to be shifted across with that horse and get a trailing position behind the leaders.

He said however that due to the circumstances of the race, HAPPY BAO BEI was left racing wide and further back in the field than had been intended.

Racing Laboratory tests of IDYLLIC WIND, DOUBLE MASTER, GREAT SPEED, SWEET BEAN, CHOICE EXCHEQUER, TELEPHATIA, GRACYDAD, ST YAZIN, ARM RUNDA, SIGHT SEEING, SPEEDY ACHIEVER, SUPER SPRINTER, SPINNING DANCER, NITRO EXPRESS, ENORMOUS HONOUR, BEAUTY PRINCE, THE SYLPH, SUNNY WIN, HAPPY SPIRIT, VICTORY MACHINE, SUPER TURBO and WONDERFUL JOURNEY (23.11.16) proved negative.
